Sights and Sounds of Port-de-Paix
-Lizards, geckos, frogs, mice, cockroaches, rats, and spiders galore! Fun :)
-Dogs! There are three (I think) that hang out on Sonlight's campus. Unfortunately, they aren't the cleanest or healthiest animals around, so the general rule is to avoid them.
-There have been multiple occasions where a taxi driver will drive by blasting Celine Dionne. For some reason they have a thing with her here. I did hear Beyonce once and Chris Brown once as well, but it's mostly music in Creole.
-Speaking of Beyonce, you hear some interesting names here. Of course there are the traditional ones- many end in "son" or have "love" mixed in there. Sonlight also has a few students with some traditional American names - including lots of names I'm familiar with from back home (Avery, Joseph, Laurenz, Mike, Ashley, lol). But then you get names at Sonlight like Beyonce, Shakira, and Jay-z!
-UN trucks pass by frequently. They have a station down the street a bit.
I'm sure I'll do more posts like this soon, once I discover more little details about Haiti. :)

Dog leaving out of the gates to Sonlight's campus.

-Dominoes is a game of choice. You’ll see a lot of people
sitting out playing. Apparently if you're loosing, you clip clothes pins to your face...?
-For most of the week I'd been listening to the sounds of the beating drums
and chants of the voodoo celebration our neighbors had been having every day.
Apparently it's the Mambo/Witch Doctors' spirit's birthday, and they have a big
celebration every 3 years that lasts a couple weeks. In just what we experienced they sacrificed
a goat, a pig, and a bull.
-I generally have eyes on me at all times once I
step outside of Sonlight’s gates. That is especially true when I wear my hair
out. It’s kind of a spectacle. People just don’t know what to make of me I
guess. They aren't used to seeing non-white Americans. Often people will ask if I'm Haitian. Surprisingly, there have been a few people who’ve actually asked if I
was mixed.
-Awesome views! On one side of campus, you can see the mountains. On the other side of campus, is the ocean.
