I Made It!
I'm here! I made it to Haiti safely after about 24 hours of
travel. Our internet has been hit or miss lately, so sorry for the delayed
update! I'm going to try to post a series of updates about my first few days.
Today, we'll start with travel...
Leg Three:
Leg One:
The lovely Angel dropped me off at BWI after a fun-filled
car ride complete with a rockout session to “Call Me Maybe” (there is a
video, but I haven’t been able to edit any).
After taking some things out at home and maneuvering things a bit at the airport, I got both suitcases checked within the weight limit.
Leg Two:
I arrived in Miami Wednesday evening and meet up with
another Sonlight missionary, Tara. We headed to our hotel for the night and
were later joined by my new roommate Katie. We got a couple hours of sleep
before meeting the rest of the Sonlight crew back at the airport for our flight
to Port-au-Prince. Strangely enough, I sat next to a Haitian man who is
currently living in Silver Spring on the flight!
Once we arrived in Port-au-Prince, we shuffled around a bit,
filled up a pick-up and the roof of our bus with luggage, and all piled in to
drive over to the in-country airport for our next flight. Some of the team went
on Tortug Air and 9 of us went on MAF – a 9 passenger charter plane.
We each had to get weighed with our carry-ons to make sure
we made the cut before boarding.
The flight was about 45mins-1 hour. The flight wasn’t as bad
as I was expecting, and seeing the sights was great! (There is a video of our landing, but I can't upload it right now. I'll try later!)
Leg Four:
Upon landing in Port-de-Paix, we piled in the back of a
pick-up with our luggage and drove through town to get to Sonlight! (There is also a video of this, but again, I'll try later.)
We arrived at Sonlight at about 12:30 Thursday afternoon,
had lunch, then began moving into our housing.
Up next, apartment updates…
