Mezanmi! A Crazy Couple Days

I've been saying "mezanmi" a lot lately. It's the equivalent of the English "oh my gosh." It has been a whirlwind few days here in Port-de-Paix!

Friday-
In the wee hours of the morning a tsunami was approaching -or at least that's what everyone thought. Yes, I said tsunami. Do you think those "run to high elevation in case of a tsunami" signs that got put up all over town last summer may have gotten to people? :) Someone saw some big waves, reported it to others, and THE WHOLE TOWN fled to the mountains at 4:30 in the morning. The whole town except for the Americans, most of whom were sleeping or had no clue what was going on (good thing there wasn't really a tsunami). One of the other missionaries in town said she looked outside and saw hundreds of people filling the street headed away from the shore. There were men shouting things about an earthquake and babies wrapped in blankets. "Moun, moun, moun!" (people, people, people) and "tout Ayisyen" (all Haitians) as my assistants said at school later that morning. It made for some tired students and a few laughs once the threat was gone, but really erased the question in my mind about how people would find out about an emergency that happened here without the level of advanced communication we have back home! If you want something spread, Haiti is apparently the place to be!

Saturday-
Another Sonlight missionary and his daughter got into a taxi (motorcycle) accident. A few people came to their aide and they are recovering from scrapes and bruises. Luckily that was the extent of their injuries. Taxi accidents tend to be bad here.

Saturday night to now-
I've been sick. Again. Cold/flu like symptoms that I thought were just allergies at first. It's been quite the task trying to teach with no voice, in the midst of my constant nose-blowing, or through coughing fits. My kids have been trying to be easy on me though. :)
Katie (my roommate) has also been sick, along with a few other teachers, assistants, and students who have been out. No bueno. Seems like we just can't get a break here!

Early this morning-
Another Sonlight missionary family was robbed in the middle of the night. All their computers and phones were stolen, along with Katie's (she was spending the night there). Unfortunately Katie also came face-to-face with the thief which wasn't a fun moment for her. Everyone is safe, just a little shaken up.

Please pray for the attitudes and spirits of everyone here at Sonlight and in our town. Despite all that's been going on, I know God is sovereign and is in control of it all!
