Here We Go!
The question I've been asked most frequently over the past few months has been some sort of variation of "Have you heard about Haiti yet?" (though some of you probably have no idea what I'm talking about, lol). Well friends, the time has come to announce...
I'm moving to Haiti!
When I think about moving to a third world country, stricken with disease and poverty, and leaving my life in MD behind, it feels kinda crazy. But when I think about getting back in the classroom, seeing what the Lord is doing outside of the American bubble, and inevitably experiencing much growth in my walk with Him, it's pretty exciting.
So here are the details- I'll be teaching 2nd grade at Sonlight Academy in Port-de-Paix, Haiti (on the northernmost coast).

I'll be living in a house close to campus with 3 other single female missionaries. I leave mid-August and will be in Haiti for probably two years. I will definitely be coming home over the summer after the first year, and I may be able to come home over Christmas breaks as well. I will be a volunteer missionary, and thus have to raise support for my stay (visit the Support tab above for more details and to give).
Thank you so much to all the people who have been so supportive over the last few months as I've gone through this process! I've read many stories about missionaries who face negative feedback and discouragement when announcing their plans, so I was bracing myself for people's reactions. But EVERYONE I've talked to about this so far has been nothing but encouraging and affirming! I am truly blessed by such a wonderful community (that I will miss SO MUCH)!
The next 5 months will be full of consolidating, packing, improving my Creole, refreshing myself on how to be a teacher again, support raising, and squeezing in as many American comforts and time with my favorite people as I can (the 5 month bucket list has commenced)!
I'll be blogging my preparation, and throughout my time in Haiti to help stay connected! Keeping checking back for more updates!
Miss Lish - I am SOOOO very proud of you! While I am not in a position to offer you financial support, I will pray for you every day. If there is any way I can help you with your class, please let me know. We could set up pen pals between your class and mine! (My French isn't great, but I might be able to translate!) Love you, sweetheart!
ReplyDeleteThanks! Pen pals would be awesome! I'll be teaching at an English immersion school, so the kids would be able to write in English! We should definitely set it up!
